About Hospice and Palliative Care
The team-based, patient-centered services of hospice are widely recognized as the gold standard for end-of-life care. Over the past nine years, the Nebraska Hospice and Palliative Care Association leadership has helped hospice admissions in Nebraska grow by more than 80 percent. Nearly one-half of those who die in Nebraska now receive the supportive care of hospice.

- Among the patient populations studied, the mean survival was 29 days longer for hospice patients than for non-hospice patients.
- Studies have shown hospice is less expensive than conventional care during the last six months of life. Less high-cost technology is used, and family, friends and volunteers provide 90 percent of the day-to-day patient care at home.
- Researchers at Duke University found that hospice reduced Medicare costs by an average of $2,309 per hospice patient.
